Researchers have determined which best remove particles as contrasted to surgical masks and N95 respirators. They found homemade masks had filtration rates reaching up to 79%, as contrasted to 97% for N95 masks and 70% for surgical masks. Thus, it can be said that N95 masks are greater in providing protection.
The best-performing face masks were made from two layers of quality cotton with a thread count of 180 or more. Not only that, performing well were fabrics with better and thicker thread and tightness, like batiks. Double-layer masks consisting of a cotton outer part and a flannel inner layer also did great. Cloth masks may be reusable, but certain materials must also be considered in terms of protection.
